Milan creates its own spatial dynamics and problems through the dichotomies between historical and contemporary urban contexts. While some values have been preserved or centuries some of them have been defeated by the needs of modernized society and functioned for the sake of urban services. At that point, Navigli is one of the most crucial value of Milano that only has traces today. Even though Milan establishes unique relations for locals and visitors –considering its vibrant and colorful urban life, urban culture, and international identity- Nevigli provides further possibilities for stronger connections and scenarios.
Besides the abstract and tangible links between humans, water, and the built environment
how about the “sensations”
derived from experiences at particular intersections of Milano and Navigli.
Abstraction of Sense Identity
Among the 8 focal points, conca dell’incoronata is selected to be further focused on. "CONCA DELL INCORONATA" is the area of interest where all the MILANESE SENSES are compacted and integrated with each other, through the different states of water.
The water refilled part of Navigli recreates the liquid form of water itself., while it composes a new public area within the existing topography of the land. In this area, citizens can TOUCH the water and have a TASTE in the existing café and restaurants.
Re-opened Navigli part through the underpass, covered with a wooden platform to connect the bike and pedestrian movement through the junction. To overcome the unpleasant pass over the tunnel, the lightning of the water has been given with the form and effect of the dripping water, which would create a sense of SEEING.
Above this underpass, the urban furniture that has been designed to give the feeling of ice form and same time provide better quality for this urban balcony area.
Finally, through the existing green area which is the dry part of the canal currently, a mist garden is proposed to combined the gas mode of the water. The mist aimed to give the experience of TOUCH feeling of the gas form of water, SEEING the foggy sense and to find forest-like SMELL of the spontaneous sunken garden.
Through the relations of forms and senses of water, the legacy of Da Vinci to relate the water with social activities would reappear in the whole area.
